About tension

Deep-tissue naturopathic massage aims to find and resolve patterns of tension in the body. It can have positive and sometimes even life-changing outcomes.

Tension is caused through physical or emotional stress. It is the result of muscles that remain contracted in the body for long periods of time.

When we over-train or get injured, our muscles contract to protect the affected part of the body – and if left unresolved, further injury is inevitable. When we are under constant pressure at work, our muscles contract to protect against failure. When we sustain an injury or have a bone or joint condition such as arthritis, other muscles around the site of the injury overwork to compensate and cause additional difficulties. For all of us, long-term stress, sudden shocks or ‘strokes of fate’ can anchor tension deep in the body.

Ultimately, prolonged and unresolved tension can result in chronic fatigue, insomnia, digestive disorders, depression, disease and recurring physical injuries, while deeper emotional issues (including those from our childhood) can manifest as physical pain.

In all cases, massage can help.

“For the last year I haven’t been able to stand for more than 10 minutes, nor to cook or work around the house. I have had to go up and down the stairs one step at a time, holding the banister. I was finally diagnosed with arthritis in both knees and in my right foot as well as ligament damage. I was awaiting surgery when I had the opportunity to have some deep tissue massage sessions by Dr Ty Francis. After an hour-and-a-half of intense massage, the first session was complete. I didn’t know what to expect, but after returning home I came down the stairs one at a time! Today, I got out of bed and didn’t feel like my feet were cracking. I have managed to stand for 3 hours to cook without my legs hurting. Wow! I will definitely be going back and highly recommend Ty.”

“In everything we’ve done, massage is significantly effective… There’s not a single condition we’ve looked at, including cancer, that hasn’t responded positively to massage… Massage works because it changes your whole physiology.”
